Tennis Elbow & Golfer’s elbow

What is Tennis Elbow?
It is a painful condition of elbow, where lateral ( outer ) aspect of elbow becomes painful. It is commonly seen among tennis players so it named like that but , it can also be seen in non tennis players. The extens or tendons at its attachment at lateral elbow bone (lateral epicondyle) get inflamed and there might be minor tears also.
Causes of tennis elbow:
Most commonly it is because of stress & over use of elbow. But it can be due to age related degeneration or as a part of inflammatory arthritis.
What is Golfer’s elbow?
It is like tennis elbow, but here medial ( inner ) aspect of elbow become painful. Here flex or tendons attached at medial epicondyle is affected.
Treatment
• Avoid overuse & exertion In pain
• Take NSAIDs and apply ice 3-4 times per day
• Physiotherapy like IFT, SWD can be taken under guidance for 2-6 weeks
If no result with above mentioned treatment options are
a. Joint injection : Intrarticular injection of local anesthesia & steroid with or without Ultrasound guidance to reduce swelling & inflammation
b. PRP Therapy ( Platelet Rich Plasma): Most recent treatment supported by lot of recent researches is injection of platelet rich plasma inside elbow joint . Normally one injection is enough but at times two or three injections may be needed. Injection is simple and given after local anesthetic injection.
c. In extremely rare situation, surgery is needed
Post Treatment Care
• Ice is applied in post injection period
• Rest of elbow, wrist and fingers is need at initial two days after injection
• Within 24-48 hours of injection pain start reducing.
